Volleyball finishes 2012 season with loss to Amherst
LEWISTON, Maine — Amherst College encountered little resistance in defeating the Bates College volleyball team 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-7) on Saturday at Alumni Gym, to wrap up the regular season for both teams.
The visiting Lord Jeffs (14-8, 7-3 NESCAC) earned the fourth seed in next weekend’s eight-team NESCAC Volleyball Championship, and will face rival Williams, the fifth seed in the quarterfinals at 8pm on Friday at Connecticut College.
Bates finishes the season with a 10-16 overall record, 1-9 in conference play.
Lauren Antion led Amherst’s potent attack with 12 kills and only two attack errors in 20 attempts (.500). Emily Waterhouse had nine kills and two errors (.233), and Lizzie Ahern contributed eight kills with only one error in 18 attempts (.389). Nicole Carter distributed 30 assists in the win, and Kristin Keeno had a match-high 23 assists.
Senior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) and first-year Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) shared Bates’ team lead with five kills apiece, and first-year Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) led the Bobcats with 14 digs. Sophomore Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) had 13 assists and two kills.
