Beaulieu scores 1,000th point as Bates rolls at UMPI
LEWISTON, Maine — Bates senior Allie Beaulieu scored a game-high 19 points and joined the team’s 1,000-point club as the Bobcats won 80-38 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the University of Maine Presque Isle on Tuesday night.
Junior Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists as Bates rose to 6-7 on the season. Sophomore Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) scored 13 points to go with four assists from off the bench.
Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.), who started the game with 991 career points, made her first three 3-pointers over the first six minutes of the game, the third one at the 14:16 mark of the half, giving Bates a 14-2 lead and representing Beaulieu’s 998th, 999th and 1,000th career points.
Overall the senior captain made 7-of-11 shots from the field overall, including 5-of-7 three-point attempts, extending her team record to 176 threes in her career. By the end of the night she had into 16th place on the Bobcats’ all-time scorers list, passing former teammate Lauren Yanofsky ’10 (1,001) and current Bowdoin head coach Adrienne Shibles ’91 (1,005).
Emily Pelletier scored 11 points to lead the Owls.
Beaulieu netted 16 points in the first half, leading Bates to a 38-19 lead at the break. Kelly scored 10 points in the second half to lead the way, while sophomore Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) made all four of her shots from the field to score all nine of her points in the period.
Bates shot a sparkling 57.1 percent from the field (32/56), including 50% from three-point territory (8/16), while UMPI was limited to 30.2% shooting (13/43). The Bobcats outrebounded the Owls 34-24, and turned an 11 to 17 advantage in turnovers committed into a 23-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Bates returns to NESCAC play this weekend with games at rivals Colby (Friday at 8pm) and Bowdoin (Saturday at 4pm).
