Sophomores, freshmen pace alpine at UVM Carnival
STOWE, Vt. — The first day of the carnival season for the Bates alpine ski teams was dominated by the sophomores on the women’s team and the first-year student-athletes on the men’s team. In all, the Bobcats scored 98 points, good for eighth place among 13 competing teams.
Sophomore Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) finished 23rd among 75 skiers to lead the women’s team, with an 18th-best second run of 1:07.44 leading to a two-run combined time of 2:10.98. Fellow sophomore Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) was close behind in 25th at 2:11.33, and sophomore Emily Hayes (Natick, Mass.) took 34th at 2:13.45. Junior Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) placed 40th at 2:15.37.
First-year Chris Bradbury (Norwich, Conn.) led the Bates men in the GS, placing 29th out of 66 overall with a two-run combined time of 2:07.04. Classmates Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) and Cody Bullen (Newry, Maine) made it an all-freshman scoring trio in their collegiate debuts, in 45th (2:10.94) and 49th (2:12.68), respectively.
The UVM Carnival continues on Saturday with the slalom events at Mt. Mansfield.
