Women’s alpine third in slalom at St. Lawrence
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Led by Avril Dunleavy’s fifth-place showing, the Bates women’s alpine team placed three skiers in the top 13 and four in the top 17, finishing third among 13 squads in the slalom races as the St. Lawrence Carnival concluded at Whiteface Mountain.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams scored 549.5 team carnival points, more than enough for fifth place among 16 teams there. Colby was sixth with 474.5. Bates last finished fifth at the 2012 UVM Carnival.
Dunleavy (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted runs of 43.71 seconds and 46.44 seconds, combining for 1:30.15, .51 ahead of sixth place.
Fellow sophomores Emily Bamford (East Melbourne, Australia) and Katie Fitzpatrick (Larkspur, Calif.) came in 13th and 15th, respectively, at 1:32.55 and 1:32.75, while junior Anne Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) was out of the scoring but an impressive 17th overall at 1:33.16. As a unit, the Bates women scored 96 points, 14 ahead of fourth-place Williams and New Hampshire (82 apiece).
On the men’s side, first-year Tanner Dirstine (Boise, Idaho) was the lone Bobcat competitor who completed both runs (only 40 others did the same). Dirstine placed 34th out of 58 overall in 1:29.30.
Bates competes next weekend at the Colby Carnival, with alpine events at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Friday Giant Slalom Recap

Both Hayes and Bamford were consistently excellent in their two runs.
