Buetow, Grossman picked to return to NCAAs
INDIANAPOLIS — Bates College will have four student-athletes competing at the 2013 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championship — two from the Nordic team in junior Jordan Buetow and sophomore Hallie Grossman, and two from the alpine team in sophomore Avril Dunleavy and junior Anne Rockwell.
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) represent Bates Nordic for the second year in a row.
The Bobcats will have the advantage of familiarity with their respective race courses at Middlebury Snow Bowl and Rikert Ski Touring Center, where Bates competed at the Middlebury Carnival two weekends ago.
Buetow’s season-best performance was a third-place showing in the 10K freestyle race at the UVM Carnival, and he twice finished in 10th place in freestyle. In classical technique races, Buetow’s top efforts came in the first three carnivals, with one 12th- and two 13th-place showings.
Grossman has finished as high as eighth and 11th in freestyle races this carnival season, and has 16th- and 23rd-place finishes to her credit in classical technique races.
The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Committee announced the 74 men and 74 women selected to participate in the championships. They are selected on a regional basis from two designated regions for Alpine skiing (East and West Regions) and three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids are awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 student-athletes (three per gender per discipline) may participate from an institution.
The men’s and women’s giant slaloms will be held March 6, with the men’s and women’s slaloms conducted March 8.
Nordic events at Rikert Touring Center comprise the men’s 10K and women’s 5K classical technique races on March 7, and the women’s 15K and men’s 20K freestyle races March 9.
This year’s skiing championships will be webcast live on NCAA.com.
Dunleavy, an alpine All-East selection yesterday, returns for her second trip to NCAAs in as many chances, while Rockwell (Greenville, Maine) will make her first NCAA appearance.
