Stephen M. Fuller ’82, P’13
Alumnus, Trustee and Parent delivered the keynote address
While a student at Bates, Steve Fuller was a member of the varsity ski team and the Outing Club. He received a Treat-Livermore Falls Scholarship three consecutive years. He majored in English and went on to earn an MBA from Boston College and attended Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.
Steve is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for L.L. Bean. In this role, he oversees all marketing functions for the company, including advertising, creative, customer planning, e-commerce, advertising, database segmentation, operations (printing, paper, forecasting) as well as L.L.Bean’s Multi-Channel strategic initiatives. Since taking over the company’s marketing responsibilities in 2002, Steve has helped L.L.Bean attract more new customers than at any other time in the company’s history. Most recently he has been asked to oversee L.L. Bean’s international business and move into China.
Steve has played a key role in the development of L.L. Bean’s “Outdoor Advantage Program,” the company’s co-branded VISA card, and helped turn it into one of the largest affinity programs in the country. He was also responsible for the establishment of L.L. Bean’s relationship with Subaru and the development of Subaru’s L.L. Bean Editions in both the U.S. and Japan.
Prior to coming to L.L. Bean, Steve spent nine years in the publishing industry.
Steve has been on the boards of several environmental and outdoor organizations, including Friends of Casco Bay, Catalog Choice, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the New England Nordic Ski Association. He was a ski coach for five years with the Freeport High and Middle School Nordic teams. During those five years, no team finished lower than second in the state championships. He was also the co-founder of an iPhone/iOS race timing app – RaceSplitter – that launched on iTunes in January, 2011.
As an alumnus, Fuller has spoken at several Bates events, most recently at a Portland Bates Networking event and at the Senior Year Kick-Off Dinner in October 2008, when he asked the seniors to “remember not only Bates, but the state of Maine once you graduate and move on.” In December 2005, Fuller and his wife, Deborah “Debbie” Loux Fuller ’82, were members of the host committee for the Bates 150th event. In 2007, the Fullers were elected to the College Key. Debbie Fuller is a member of the Mount David Society Committee and their 30th Reunion Gift Committee. The Fullers have two children, Abigail, Tufts ’11; and Nathaniel, Bates Class of 2013.
In 2009, Fuller was appointed to the Board of Trustees. He is a member of the college’s Master Planning Steering Committee and was a member of the search committee that nominated Clayton Spencer as the college’s eighth president.
For his devotion, service and leadership to Bates College and the state of Maine we are honored to welcome Stephen M. Fuller, class of 1982, into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society.
