This Month in Bates History: The 1998 Lake Andrews restorationAs the first step in the summer 1998 restoration of Lake Andrews, the College opened the sluice gate at the pond's south end. As the water flowed out, all sorts of treasures appeared: a bowling ball, mangled bike, stereo set, bed frame, hockey pucks and snapping turtles (relocated to a nearby pond). Bulldozers and backhoes then went to work removing 4,963 cubic yards of dredge spoils. In the end, the College could boast a stunning new complement to the established beauty of the historic Quad. Jack '59 and Beverly Keigwin funded the restoration, and he accurately predicted at the time that "the Lake Andrews area has a significant potential as a place of respite and rejuvenation. It is a place to gather and to celebrate, a place for recreation for the soul and mind." Story and before-and-after photos: www.bates.edu/x66652.xml 14. Bates People in the NewsNBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor Brian Williams, who received an honorary degree at Commencement, appeared in coverage of graduation ceremonies nationwide in the Christian Science Monitor, on C-SPAN and on his own newscast. Williams is the scion of a Bates family. President Hansen wrote about Bates values in a piece belonging to a Lewiston Sun Journal package marking the College's 150th anniversary. Britain's The Economist cited an analysis of pharmaceutical R&D co-authored by Van Brantner '02 — and on a lighter note, the International Herald Tribune carried a story about a Web site, founded by Batesies, that shows the power of the blog to shape contemporary music. www.bates.edu/bates-in-the-news.xml |
