1. Bush, Dean campaigns name Bates grads as officials
Bush-Cheney 2004 announced on Nov. 11 the appointment of Randy Bumps '95 as executive director of the campaign's operation in Maine. Bumps, who officially began his duties on Nov. 3, most recently served as state director for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, and is a former member of the Maine House of Representatives. He received a degree in political science from Bates. Already working to re-elect the president is Jim Tobin, a 1983 economics major. Tobin is New England campaign chairman. On the other side, we learned that Dean for America on Nov. 13 named Tamara Pogue '99 as the campaign's national field director. Pogue, who joined the campaign in February, has been serving as interim field director. Pogue will oversee the day-to-day operations of the campaign's field staff across the country. Pogue served most recently as campaign manager for John Baldacci's successful gubernatorial bid in Maine. She holds a degree in rhetoric from Bates. Already serving with Dean is Kate O'Connor '86, described by his national campaign headquarters as Dean's political operations head, his "right-hand person, always at his side, making sure things go right." O'Connor majored in political science.

2. New Bates wall calendar on its way
When you think of autumn at Bates, what comes to mind? For Lauren Popell Velasco '94, it is a "blanket of leaves covering the Quad like a giant, warm autumn quilt...." The Office of Alumni and Parent Programs is pleased to share another year of Bates images -- coming soon to a mailbox near you! If you do not receive your calendar by mid-December, please e-mail us at alumni@bates.edu.

3. "The Bates Student" focuses on College finances
A recent lead article in The Bates Student, the independent student newspaper, caught our eye: "College's Endowment Lags Behind Peer Schools." www.batesstudent.com/nov11/news1.htm

4. Bates encourages student aspirations to college
About 80 Lewiston High School ninth-graders came to campus in mid-November to get a sense of what is possible after high school. www.bates.edu/x45803.xml

5. Did you know?
BatesNet, the alumni community online, features photos of alumni weddings, mini-reunions, babies, regional club events, and other Bates groups in the Alumni Photo Gallery. [Note: BatesNet services have been folded into the Bates Alumni Community.]

6. Boston Batesies help feed the hungry
On Nov. 8, 24 Boston-area alumni gathered at the Greater Boston Food Bank to sort food and box meals. In three hours, the team -- joined by 10 other volunteers -- sorted 6,970 pounds of food and created 130 meals per volunteer! Thank you to the Boston Bates Club for your service.

7. Mount David Society launched
Mount David: The highest point on campus and a fitting name for our new Bates Fund leadership giving society. The new Mount David Society recognizes Bates alumni, parents, and friends who put the College first in their annual philanthropy with unrestricted gifts of $1,855 or more to the Bates Fund. The Mount David Society shares a spirit of leadership and excellence with the annual Mount David Summit http://www.bates.edu/mt-david-summit.xml, Bates' annual day-long celebration of student academic achievement. Please consider becoming a charter member of the Mount David Society today - your gift can make a difference.

For more information, please contact Sandra Anthoine in the Office of Alumni and Parent Programs at 207-786-6225 or mountdavidsociety@bates.edu.

8. This month in Bates history: America enters World War II
Three days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, signaling the U.S. entry into war vs. the Axis powers, The Bates Student headlined its Dec. 10, 1941, editorial simply: "War." The editors support the call to arms and acknowledge the humanity-numbing prospect of war. Yet at the same time, they warn of war's greatest danger: allowing hatred, particularly racial hatred, to consume the soul. www.bates.edu/x46210.xml

9. Classes of 1993 and 1994: OCS 10-year deadline approaches
If you currently have a reference file with the Office of Career Services and wish to have that file maintained until 2014, you must inform the OCS of your wishes before March 1. Unless we hear from you, your file will become inactive as of March 1 and will be properly disposed of. You may contact the OCS at 207-786-6233 or ocsreferences@bates.edu.

10. Bates People in the News
Speaking for peer colleges working to improve retention of minority students, President Elaine Tuttle Hansen tells The Boston Globe "we can't afford to blow it." Writing in Foreign Affairs with co-author M. Taylor Fravel, Evan S. Medeiros '93 of the Rand Corporation describes China's new interest -- and sophistication -- in diplomacy. Sports Illustrated praises a new history of the Bill Russell-era Boston Celtics by Thomas Whalen '86. Meanwhile, the Maine Sunday Telegram profiles Assistant Professor of Art Pamela Johnson on the occasion of an exhibit featuring her work; and Mainebiz showcases an essay on Bates in the community by Vice President Bill Hiss. www.bates.edu/bates-in-the-news.xml
