LADD Internships
“As a double major in English and Spanish, this internship has allowed me to share my love of literature and strengthen my language skills. It was a perfect fit. …This internship program is an invaluable and unique asset to our school and I am proud to have been a part of it.” – 2011 Intern
“I work with seven different schools for interns during the year -and by far, the Bates interns are the best! Responsible, hard working, conscientious…….I only wish the school were closer to my office so that I could have Bates interns all year round” -2011 Sponsor
The Ladd Internship Program was started in 1978 and funded in part by George E. Ladd, Jr., a benefactor of Bates College. Mr. Ladd was interested in exposing liberal arts students to the working world and the program provides a stipend for summer employment with pre-selected organizations and companies. The Ladd program is sponsored by the Bates Career Development Center and made possible by a gift from the George and Helen Ladd Charitable Corporation.
- Internships are available to students who have completed their junior year by Summer 2012. Occasionally, internships are available to sophomores and seniors.
- For-profit placements pay their interns directly the full amount of their summer earnings. All students receive a minimum stipend of $3,000 although each employer is free to pay the student more than that amount. When the internship is completed, Bates will issue the placement a reimbursement check for 50% of the stipend up to a total of $1,500.
- Interns employed at non-profit organizations receive a stipend of $3,000. Payment is made directly to the student by Bates College in three equal installments.
- Because of the Short Term Unit at the end of the academic year, many students are available to work for four consecutive months, beginning in late April.
In Summer 2011, 11 organizations sponsored a total of 13 interns from Bates. Interns are responsible for their housing and travel costs.
