Was the experience helpful to you in learning more about the career field and your own career aspirations or occupational interests?  Please share briefly what you plan to do as a result of this experience and why.

Yes, learning more about the position made me realize that I would like to be a guidance counselor who has the dual responsibility of guidance and college counseling rather than just being one or the other.

This experience has definitely confirmed my interest in pursuing admission to law school once I graduate from Bates.  It appeals to my interest in a analytical, challenging and highly rewarding profession.

Would you recommend a Career Discovery In Practice job shadow to other students?   Yes

It was a pleasure working with Gorayeb & Associates and for the first time getting a real hands-on opportunity in the legal field.  I learned a tremendous amount in a rather short amount of time, and am just beginning to grasp the profound positive impact their work has on the lives of those they argue for (they only take on plaintiff work).

What did you like most about your job shadow?

My favorite part of the experience was that I was able to see several roles and to network with a variety of individuals in the organization, and that I was not simply following one individual around. Additionally, I was able to meet much of the organization’s senior leadership, and felt extremely welcomed and respected.

This experience was extremely helpful in confirming my interest in pursuing healthcare administration, and as a result, I am seeking to network within the Portland healthcare community to find a position in an area clinic, hospital, or other healthcare organization. I also intend to pursue a Master’s program in Health Management in a few years as a result of having had this experience.

What did you like most about your job shadow?

This was my first shadow experience with a primary care doctor so I loved being able to see patients with Dr. Spingarn. I liked seeing the close relationship that Dr. Spingarn has built with his patients as he has cared for them over the years. He also shared many stories and offered great advice about his medical career.

Yes this job shadow was very helpful, I have been really considering primary care and pediatrics and this was my first experience with both. I really loved the work environment and I could picture myself enjoying this job. The shadow experience helped me to decide to continue to pursue medical school and primary care.

I think the best way to decide if you like a job is to go out and try it for a day. The CDIP program is a great opportunity to network with professionals and ask lots of questions.

What did you like most about your job shadow?

I really liked that I had the opportunity to learn from Mr. Cramer, a veteran in the field, and also his junior analysts who are new to the industry. All Bates graduates, I was truly able to connect to them on a level that I was not necessarily expecting…I was comfortable asking them any questions that I was curious about, and that was a huge benefit of my experience.  Perhaps, though, the most useful aspect of my experience at RBC was getting advice from Rob and his analysts about how to best use my time at Bates—that advice and guidance will continue to help me over my next 3 years, and I am incredibly thankful for their insight.

Was the experience helpful to you in learning more about the career field and your own career aspirations or occupational interests?  Please share briefly what you plan to do as a result of this experience and why.

This experience was extremely helpful in teaching me more about being a physician. After Bates I intend to go to medical school to become a physician, although I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to handle Emergency Room medicine. However, after working with Chris, I realized that it’s definitely not as dramatic as tv makes it out to be. In fact, I really liked ER medicine so much, I might consider specializing in it because there are so many different types of cases and you get to work with all systems of the body. You never got bored.

Would you recommend a Career Discovery in Practice job shadow to other students?   Yes
Please Explain:

Yes, it’s a great experience and it lets you see if you would really like the career that you’re interested. It clears up a lot of misconceptions that you have about a job. Plus, it makes you really excited about your prospective career and motivates you to get good work done at Bates.

What did you like least about your job shadow?

I am a half-marathon runner, so I loved doing PT (physical fitness training) with my sponsor and all of the other officers and JAG candidates in the morning. I could see how a student not as interested in fitness might not be so enthusiastic about a 4:45 wakeup followed by a run and a lot of pushups J That said, the JAG candidates are split up into several run groups, and anyone who put in the effort would be more than welcome to join the slowest run group—we ran very slowly (maybe a 10 or 11 minute mile pace?), and I’m sure the overwhelming majority of Batesies would be able to handle it. Again, I loved this part of the job shadow and thought that participating in the fitness training gave me a more accurate and comprehensive view of what Army life is like, but just wanted to note this as a potential downside for some students wanting to do the same job shadow.

Would you recommend a Career Discovery In Practice job shadow to other students?   YES!!
Please Explain:

I can only speak about my particular CDIP, but I felt immediately welcomed by the Bates alum and found the entire experience to be a fantastic introduction to a career I had never seriously explored before.

Was the experience helpful to you in learning more about the career field and your own career aspirations or occupational interests?  Please share briefly what you plan to do as a result of this experience and why.

The experience was very helpful. I learned a lot about all the different professions in the medical field, and it made me think a lot harder about whether I want to become a doctor or a nurse practitioner. I now know that I definitely want to work in a hospital for the first part of my career.
