Spring/Fall Break Trips
Occasionally we offer a trip during Spring Break or Fall Break that serves as a cultural, religious, and/or social justice immersion. These trips have been offered in the past, and we look forward to new ventures!
Fall Break, 2008: The Festival of the Black Christ, Portobelo, Panama
Cosponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs/Multicultural Center. Participants experienced a religious festival/pilgrimage attended by tens of thousands of Panamanians who travel great distances on foot to show reverence to “El Cristo Negro,” credited with numerous miracles. This immersion also consisted in participants staying in Portobelo in an artist colony engaged in multi-media art projects and local cooking inspired by indigenous influences.
Spring Break, 2009: The Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu, New Mexico
Participants stayed in a Benedictine monastery in the high desert of New Mexico, learning about monastic life, eating meals in silence with the monks, and taking time for reflective and meditative journaling, prayer, walks, yoga, conversation, and silence.
