Web Policy

Official policy for posting information on the Bates Web site

  1. The purpose of the Bates College Web site is to support the educational mission of the College.
  2. Bates College Web servers host three categories of Web pages: “official” pages, “course-related” pages, and “non-official” pages.An official page is one that communicates official information about the College or one of its programs or offices, and is maintained for that purpose by an academic department or administrative office. Official pages are subject to review and approval by the Office of Communications and Media Relations.A course-related Web page or site is one that supports one or more courses at the College. Web pages and Web sites associated with a course are controlled by the faculty member who teaches the course and are not subject to approval by Communications and Media Relations.A non-official page is any page that is not an official or course-related page. Examples of non-official pages are personal pages, student-created sites, and the sites of student organizations. Non-official pages are not reviewed by Communications and Media Relations, however links on these sites may be restricted.
  3. All materials produced by Bates College personnel on official pages of the Bates College Web site are protected by copyright.
  4. The Bates College name, seal, wordmark, and other official images are property of the College, and may not be used without permission of the Office of Communications and Media Relations.
  5. In order to reinforce a strong and unified visual identity for the College, Web developers for official College pages should follow the Bates College Style Guide. In addition, Bates College adheres to the latest edition of The AP Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (With Internet Guide and Glossary).
  6. Copyrighted material may not be used on a Bates College Web page without permission of the copyright owner. See the Bates College Copyright Policy, which includes procedures for notifying the College concerning claims of copyright infringement related to the College’s Web site.
  7. Persons uploading content and graphics to a Bates Web page are responsible for ensuring that copyrights are respected. College-owned photographic images anywhere in the public portion of the Bates Web site may be republished without payment, although permission must be requested from the Office of Communications and Media Relations (CMR), and a photo credit designated by CMR should accompany republication of the photograph. If CMR does not know the source of a photograph on the Bates Web site, the Office will request that the photograph simply be credited in republication: “Courtesy Bates College” or “By Permission of Bates College.”
  8. Bates College does not permit Web posting of content that is illegal, that violates license rights or other contractual agreements, or that violates the privacy rights of any individual. For information regarding restrictions on programs, software, and full-text, statistical, bibliographic, and other databases licensed to Bates College, please contact the Vice President for Information and Library Services and Librarian.
  9. Bates College reserves the right to reject or remove from any Bates College Web server materials that are outdated, erroneous or misleading, illegal, unethical, or detrimental to the mission and operations of the College.
  10. Bates College students, faculty and staff members are expected to comply with the Bates College Computer Use Policy.
  11. The Bates College Web site contains links that allow visitors to access other Web sites that are not controlled by the College. Such links are provided as a convenience, and do not imply endorsement by the College. Bates College assumes no responsibility or liability for any material on these links, and expressly disclaims any responsibility for the contents of any linked site.
  12. Bates College reserves the right to refuse to offer a link on an official College Web page, or to remove a link without notice.
  13. Visitors to the Bates College Web site may not post or transmit information or materials that violate the rights of any third party; that contain known destructive or harmful components; that contain threatening, abusive, or obscene images or language; or that are otherwise illegal.
  14. The College reserves the right, without notice, to remove material or edit messages received from visitors to the Web site. Bates College expressly disclaims responsibility for materials submitted to the College or posted in chat rooms or bulletin boards, including contents of personal or unofficial Web pages.
  15. Visitors to the Bates College Web site may not modify, delete or otherwise tamper with any information or materials on the Web site.
  16. Visitors to the Bates College Web site may not unlawfully use, reverse engineer or reproduce any of the software, copyrighted material, trade secrets or other proprietary information contained or used on the Web site.
  17. Bates College makes no representations regarding the accuracy or completeness of the Bates College Web site. The site is provided “as is” without any warranty.
  18. Bates College may add, change, delete or update materials on the Web site without notice.
  19. The College does not guarantee that the Web site will be available continuously.
  20. Visitors may use the Web site, but by using it, release the College from all claims.
  21. The College reserves the right to change the Web policy at any time without notice.
