Access the Bates Network from off-campus by configuring your computer to dial in through a modem connection.
Open the Network System Preferences:

  • Click on the Apple menu
  • Select System Preferences...
  • Click Network icon
Look for the
(upper left corner of your Desktop)

Modify your TCP/IP settings to use PPP:
  • Click on the TCP/IP tab
  • Show: Internal Modem
  • Configure: Using PPP
  • DNS Servers:
    134.181.128.1
    134.181.128.3
  • Search Domains:
    bates.edu


Configure the PPP settings:
  • Click on the PPP tab
  • Service Provider: Bates
  • Account Name:
    your network username
  • Password:
    your network password
  • Telephone Number:
    376-3310
  • Save password:
    checked
  • NOTE: to change the phone number to this new one, open the ppp connection and click in the box to delete and type in the new one
  • Click PPP Options...


  • Match the settings shown in the diagram:
  • Or check:
  • Connect automatically when needed
  • Disconnect if idle for 15 minutes
  • Disconnect when user logs out
  • Redial if busy
  • Send PPP echo packets
  • Use TCP header compression
  • Click OK


Configure your modem:
  • Select your modem from the list:
  • Check:
  • Enable error correction
  • Wait for dial tone
  • Dialing: Tone
  • Sound: On
  • Show modem status in menu bar
  • Click: Apply Now to activate settings


Connect to the Bates Network:
  • Click on the Modem icon in the menu bar
  • Select: Connect
