Dial-in Networking: Macintosh OSX Settings

Access the Bates Network from off-campus by configuring your computer to dial in through a modem connection.
A. Open the Network System Preferences:

  1. Click on the Apple menu
  2. Select System Preferences...
  3. Click Network icon
Look for the
(upper left corner of your Desktop)

B. Modify your TCP/IP settings to use PPP:
  1. Click on the TCP/IP tab (A)
  2. Show: Internal Modem (B)
  3. Configure: Using PPP (C)
  4. DNS Servers: (D)
    134.181.128.1
    134.181.128.3
  5. Search Domains: (E)
    bates.edu


C. Configure the PPP settings:
  1. Click on the PPP tab (A) 
  2. Service Provider: Bates
  3. Account Name:
    your network username
  4. Password:
    your network password
  5. Telephone Number:
    376-3310
  6. Save password:
    checked
    NOTE: to change the phone number to this new one, open the ppp connection and click in the box to delete and type in the new one
  7. Click PPP Options... (B)


  1. Match the settings shown in the diagram:
  2. Or check:
  3. Connect automatically when needed
  4. Disconnect if idle for 15 minutes
  5. Disconnect when user logs out
  6. Redial if busy
  7. Send PPP echo packets
  8. Use TCP header compression
  9. Click OK


D. Configure your modem:
  1. Select your modem from the list: (A)
  2. Check:
  3. Enable error correction
  4. Wait for dial tone
  5. Dialing: Tone
  6. Sound: On
  7. Show modem status in menu bar (B)
  8. Click: Apply Now to activate settings (C) 


E. Connect to the Bates Network:
  1. Click on the Modem icon in the menu bar
  2. Select: Connect
