Hate Crime-Bias Incident Committee

About

The Hate Crime–Bias Incident Committee responds to bias incidents and hate crimes motivated wholly or in part by bias based upon race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, marital or parental status, age, or disability. When an alleged hate crime or bias incident has occurred in which the perpetrator is unknown, the Dean of Students Office issues a public statement informing the Bates community of the precise nature of the incident. The Dean of Students then convenes the committee to determine what, if any, additional response is necessary.

The composition of the Committee includes representation from the following offices: the Dean of Students, the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Intercultural Education, the Office of Equity and Diversity Resources, the Office of Security and Campus Safety, the Multifaith Chaplaincy, and the Office of the Dean of Faculty. Students and/or faculty/staff targeted by the incident, as well as leaders of the campus organization most closely related to the event, are also invited to attend.

Students are urged to report hate crimes and bias incidents to Security, one of the Deans of Students, JAs or RCs, or any office with representation on this committee.

A Message from the Committee on Sexual Violence

Bates denounces the use of violence within our community directed against any individual or group. We, the college community, regard sexual assault as a violent crime, a particularly heinous form of sexual harassment, whether committed by a stranger or an acquaintance on or off campus We condemn the commission of sexual assaults and believe the person charged with such offenses should be dealt with promptly and fairly through the courts and our own judicial systems. Moreover, we are dedicated to eradicating hostile settings in which our ability work, study, live, and learn together is inhibited. Finally, we pledge assistance through the various departments of the College in aiding survivors of assault to determine how best they may regain control over their own circumstances.
