Goals of a Bates Education 2003-2004

Fall 2003

In early June, 2003, six Bates faculty attended the Asheville Institute on General Education, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  The team consisted of Pam Baker, Amy Bradfield, Matt Cote, Paqui Lopez, John Smedley, and Elizabeth Tobin.  Returning from Asheville, the team met with Dean Reich and President Hansen, and suggested that Bates faculty take the first steps necessary to deciding if they will make changes to our general education curriculum.  We proposed that faculty begin a conversation about our goals for a Bates education, as a necessary prelude to understanding whether our current requirements for all Bates students fit with our goals.

This website presents notes from the many open meetings sponsored by the Asheville group, copies of emails from the Asheville group offering discussion topics and sometimes reporting on what we have heard.  We hope that faculty will use the website as a means of learning what their colleagues are thinking.  We are also always interested in comments from faculty, about  the information presented here, or other thoughts related to our goals for a Bates education.
