About

Jonathan Kurzfeld joined Bates as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics in 2018. He is interested in the intersection of economics, criminal justice, and political economy. His current research centers on understanding behavior in prisons and his research agenda extends into issues of discrimination, political polarization, and public corruption. Jonathan was born and raised in California and earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Riverside.

Professor Kurzfeld’s teaching interested include microeconomics, law and economics, public economics, and labor economics. In particular, he enjoys examination of the interactions between public institutions and private markets leading to fundamental tradeoffs between efficiency and equity.
