Aleksandar Hemon was born in Sarajevo, fiction writer and essayist Aleksandar Hemon visited Chicago in 1992, intending to stay for a matter of months. While he was there, Sarajevo came under siege, and he was unable to return home. He published his first story in English in 1995, and has since written two novels, The Lazarus Project (Riverhead 2009) and The Making of Zombie Wars (FSG 2015), three collections of short fiction, and a book of essays, The Book of My Lives (Picador 2013). Winner of MacArthur “Genius” Foundation and Guggenheim Fellowships, Hemon has been nominated twice for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the National Book Award. He lives in Chicago, IL.
