Academic Advising
Your first-year seminar instructor is looking forward to meeting you in the fall and talking with you about your academic choices and aspirations. Even before you arrive on campus, though, members of the faculty and staff are available to advise you on course selection, answer your questions about requirements and give you tips about areas of study that you may want to explore. Listed below are names and schedules of faculty members available to take your calls during the two weeks of summer registration. You can also find helpful information about academic requirements, advanced placement, and other areas you want to know about by going to Welcome Entering Students home page and clicking Academic Information.

Also available during much of the summer will be Holly Gurney, Associate Dean of Students and Ree Russell, Administrative Assistant, at 207-786-6220, firstyearstudents@bates.edu. Registration advice is available as well from the Registrar at 207-755-5949, registrar@bates.edu.
RegistrationRegistration consists of three steps during which you enter your course preferences, check to see the courses with limited size that you were randomly assigned, and make adjustments to ensure you have 4 courses. Registration I – select and enter your courses July 15, 10:00 a.m. (EDT) — July 19, 4:00 p.m. Choose three courses and a First-Year Seminar any time this week. Select 4 courses yourself or call a summer faculty advisor who will help you find courses that you might like.
Registration II – review “randomization” results
July 20– 21, 11:59 p.m. (EDT)
Some Bates courses have limited enrollment or seats as listed under “cap” in Garnet Gateway’s Schedule of Courses. After Registration I closes, the Registrar’s Office will randomly assign students into the seats in limited courses. We call this “randomization.” Look at your “Register or Add/Drop Courses” page in Garnet Gateway to view the results of randomization and see which courses you are now registered for.
Registration III – adjust your schedule (add/drop)
July 22, 10:00 a.m. (EDT) — July 26, 11:59 p.m.
If, after randomization, you don’t have 4 courses for the fall semester or have changed your mind, you can now make changes. Select new courses yourself or call a summer faculty advisor. Enrollment during Registration III (add/drop) is on a first come, first-served basis.
Add/Drop will again open for all students on Tuesday, September 3, 7:00 a.m. so you will have a chance to make adjustments then or after meeting with your First-Year Seminar advisor later that day.
Go to www.bates.edu/entering/registration-overview to learn how to register.
