Associate Dean of Admission & Student Transition

Carmita McCoy currently serves in the Offices of Admissions and Dean of Students as Associate Dean of Admission and Student Transition at Bates College. In this unique role, Carmita works one year in the admissions office, where she is an associate dean for multicultural enrollment, recruiting students from underrepresented backgrounds. The following year, she assists them through their freshman experience as associate dean for student transition. The college designed this position known as ‘swing deans,’ as part of a broader effort to increase the diversity of the student body and enhance the experience of students of color, as well as those who are first-generation to college or who are from rural Maine.

Carmita has over twenty-five years of experience in Admissions and Student Affairs work at Bates, Maine College of Art and DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University in psychology and sociology and received a Master of Science in management of public service from DePaul University in 1992. Carmita has served on numerous state, regional, and national committees regarding student recruitment, access and retention in college. She has a long-standing commitment and passion for providing services to under-represented groups in higher education. Carmita has written several articles about multicultural recruitment and retention and has given multiple presentations regarding diversity issues.
