Bates welcomes new Assistant Vice President for Human Resources and Environmental Health & Safety Shanna Hines

untitledBates is pleased to welcome Shanna Hines to Bates College. Shanna is a human resources leader with over 20 years of experience and exposure in professional settings that include higher and secondary education, international development, health care, entertainment and hospitality. Her specific expertise in human resources is in academic settings where she has dedicated the majority of her career.

Since 2014 she has served as Director of Human Resources at Phillips Exeter Academy. There she has led a team of six responsible for delivery of recruitment, employee relations, compensation, training, consulting and compliance services. Under her leadership, the Academy ushered in a client-centered HR Partner model and a community service benefit for staff. Her committee service includes the Retirement Plans Committee, Community Conduct and Investigations Committee, and the Information Technology Strategic Planning Group.

Previously, she led The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) as Director, Human Resources & Payroll Services. In her 6 years at the helm of the SAIS human resources office, Ms. Hines led a comprehensive array of initiatives that successfully guided the transition in administrative leadership, improved organizational effectiveness and capacity, enhanced operations, delivered diversity among senior staff, and created community building for staff. Ms. Hines’ career has also included management positions in human resources at the Academy for Educational Development (AED) in Washington, D.C., Dartmouth College and Harvard University

Passionate about development and leadership within the profession, she has earned certifications as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and Campus Title IX Coordinator and Administrator.   Among her many professional memberships are the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), College and University Professional Association – Human Resources and World at Work, Professional Association for Compensation, Benefits and Total Rewards.

A graduate of Howard University, she has earned certificates in leadership and management from Harvard University and Harvard Business School, respectively. She has also done graduate coursework in human resources management and organizational development at The George Washington University.
