About

Laurie O’Higgins, Euterpe B. Dukakis Professor of Classical and Medieval Studies, trained at Trinity College Dublin and Cornell University (taking a year also to study at U.C. Berkeley).  She has taught at The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve and Bates.  Her teaching interests are broad: Greek and Latin language and literature, Food in Ancient Greece and Rome, Gender and the Body in Ancient Greece and Rome.  Her research is also broad in scope, but has focused particularly on the question of “hearing” the voices of non-elite men and women.   In addition to numerous articles she published a book with Cambridge University press in 2003 entitled Women and Humor in Classical Greece.  Laurie also published The Irish Classical Self: Poets and Poor Scholars in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries in the Classical Presences series of Oxford University Press in 2017. She is currently at work on a book length project on the Odyssey.
