Jim Murphy ’69 has been the head women’s basketball coach at Bates since 1994. Coach Murphy enters the 2014-15 season with a 333-173 career record at Bates, ranking 49th among active Division III coaches in career victories. He was also Bates’ head women’s soccer coach from 1994 through the 2010 season.

During Murphy’s tenure, the Bobcats have made four NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the regional semifinals in 1997-98 and to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05. The Bobcats advanced to the NESCAC Championship semifinals in all but two years of the tournament’s existence and faced Bowdoin in the finals for four consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2006.

From 1969 to 1993, Murphy coached and taught English at Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield, Mass. He reached six Massachusetts state championship games in girls’ soccer and girls’ basketball, garnering four Coach of the Year honors.
