Professor Duina's research and teaching interests include economic sociology, globalization, the nation state, the sociology of competition, and regional economic integration.

His recent publications include articles and chapters on institutions and the unexpected consequences of integration in NAFTA and Mercosur (2008), the nature of law  in the European Union, Mercosur and NAFTA (2006, 2004), national parliaments and legal authority in the European Union and Mercosur (2007, 2005, 2003), culture and identity in regional trade areas (2008, 2002), and the impact of scripts and norms on the design of regional trade agreements worldwide (2010).

His first book, Harmonizing Europe, focused on the problem of legal implementation in the European Union. His second book, The Social Construction of Free Trade, compares law and social change in the European Union, Mercosur, and NAFTA. His third book, Winning: Reflections on an American Obsession (forthcoming in 2010 with Princeton University Press), examines the structure and content of the ideas of winning and losing in the United States. He is now working on a fourth book, Institutions and the Economy (under contract with Polity Press).

Professor Duina is also Visiting Professor at the International Center for Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.
