Latest NewsAdams Named Offensive Rookie of the Year, Seven Football Players Make All-Conference Team 11/17/ 2003
Bates' First-Team All-NESCAC selections include offensive lineman Jeff Bolduc, tight end Mike Moynahan, Pat Foley at linebacker and defensive back Mike Horan. Adams, wide receiver Owen Miehe and defensive lineman Kurt Chapman earned Second-Team recognition. Adams '07 (Newburyport, Mass.) finished the season with 666 rushing yards on 173 carries in six games. He ranked third in the league in rushing yards per game, scored two rushing touchdowns and had one receiving touchdown. He was the NESCAC Rookie of the Week three times during the season, despite starting just five games. Adams posted five 100-yard rushing games this season, the most any Bates back has had in a single season since Chris Hickey '88 had six in 1987. His five consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing ties the mark set by Hickey in the 1987 season. After starting the season as a backup, Adams took over the starting job in the third week due to an injury. He missed the final two games of the season, however, after suffering a concussion in the final minutes of a loss to Colby. Bolduc '04 (Southborough, Mass.) was responsible for opening the holes for Adams and the rest of the Bates running backs all year. A Second-Team All-NESCAC selection last year, Bolduc helped three rookie running backs combine for eight 100-yard rushing performances in eight games this season. Moynahan '04 (Williamstown, Mass.) helped the offensive line and also joined in as a receiver for Bates, ranking third on the team with 14 receptions for 166 yards. He set career highs with six receptions for 79 yards in a loss to Middlebury. Foley '04 (Newburyport, Mass.), a captain of this year’s team, was a defensive leader all season. He ranked third on the team with 42 tackles, and added a 29-yard fumble return in a win over Williams and forced a fumble in a loss to Wesleyan. Horan '05 (Stoughton, Mass.) led the NESCAC with 18 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries. He also led Bates with 64 tackles, including 53 solo. Horan made at least one tackle behind the line of scrimmage in all but one game this season. He had five sacks, forced a fumble in a loss to Amherst, and had nine quarterback hurries. Miehe '04 (Glen Rock, N.J.), also a captain of the team, tied for the league lead with 47 receptions and finished the season fifth in receiving yards per game. He caught touchdown passes against Tufts and Colby, and had a season-high nine receptions for 116 yards in a win over Williams. Chapman '04 (Brunswick, Maine), another captain, is a Second-Team choice for the second consecutive year. He had 32 tackles, including 26 solo and 6.5 for loss. He led the team with 11 quarterback hurries and had a fumble recovery in the Amherst game. Bates finished the 2003 season with a 2-6 record, tied for eighth in the NESCAC. The Bobcats beat Williams for the first time in program history in the third game of the season, topping the Ephs 10-7. Adams scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and Horan broke up a pass on fourth down with seven seconds to play to preserve the win for the Bobcats. Bates also defeated Bowdoin, 20-17, to beat the Polar Bears for the fifth consecutive year. |
