Welcome

Scope

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides resources for the many international students, faculty, staff and visitors who come to Bates each year. Four departments share the responsibility for ensuring that all of these constituencies are informed of the processes needed to obtain visas to study, work or visit Bates. The Dean of Faculty Office works with faculty, language teaching assistants, and short term visitors and scholars. Student Affairs guides the international students through their four years of education at Bates, the Human Resource Department arranges visas for international staff, and the Center for Global Education oversees SEVIS for F-1 students.

International Scholars and Visitors

Bates welcomes international visitors and scholars to the campus each year. The process for bringing visitors and scholars to the campus requires pre-planning on the part of the person doing the inviting and sharing of information with the person being invited so that their time at Bates is as productive as possible. Knowing the rules is the best place to start. All international scholars and visitors are required to complete a Foreign National Form which should then be submitted to the Payroll Office. The Payroll Office then determines the tax implications and helps to arrange the proper payment for your visitor.
