Housing Designations

Please note that tobacco is prohibited from all campus residences and that ALL first-year housing is designated as low-chem.

ALL CLASS YEAR housing is the option that combines a cross-section of students from other class years and allows new students to interact with and learn from the experiences of their older peers.

CHEMICAL-FREE housing at Bates means that students cannot return to the residence under the influence of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.  These substances are also prohibited from the residence.  Living in a chem-free residence allows students to develop a close, vibrant community without the presence of alcohol or other drugs.

“LOW-CHEM” housing prohibits the possession of bulk alcohol anywhere in the building.  As in all our other campus residences, tobacco and other drugs are also prohibited from the residence.

THEME HOUSES  will be determined each winter for the following academic year.  Theme Houses are proposed by upper class students, and proposals must go through an application and approval process.

Bates also provides ALL-MALE and ALL-FEMALE housing options.
