R2399 Lecturer in Geology

Temporary Faculty Position

The Department of Geology at Bates College invites applications for a one-semester visiting teaching position for Fall 2013, beginning August 1, 2013. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course with two laboratory units in solid earth geology emphasizing plate tectonics and tectonic hazards. A full-time departmental assistant in instruction provides logistical support for the introductory laboratories.  The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program and welcome the opportunity for close interaction with serious students in a senior thesis advisory role. Existing and potential field-based laboratory projects and collaboration with departmental colleagues for shared student experiences offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.

The college and the Department of Geology are committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal are encouraged to apply; the search committee expects candidates to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. A Ph.D. in the earth sciences is highly desirable; ABD candidates will be considered. Review of applications begins February 28, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled.

Applicants should submit electronically, in PDF format, a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement, and copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts. Arrange for three letters of recommendation, preferably in PDF or Microsoft Word format, to be sent directly to the college.  Send all materials to Nancy LePage, Project Specialist, 207-786-6480, at academicservices@bates.edu and include in the subject line your last name and Geology R2399.
