Access to the Internet Using BatesGuest
The BatesGuest SSID is the college’s wireless network available for visitors, guests, and program attendees of the college who have been provided with a username and password. If you do not have a set of credentials to provide you with access to the BatesGuest wireless network, please contact the office or individual sponsoring your visit. The application process may take up to 48 hours, and is subject to approval. The application form is available from Help Desk Services, located in the George and Helen Ladd Library.
A. Available Services: (during the limited, fixed time of the Account)
- Internet Access, including access to your web based e-mail, standard web pages, and other services that are web based. Internet access is limited to ports 80 and 443, HTTP and HTTPS respectively.
- BatesGuest access to other private network environments is not guaranteed. If you require a VPN Client to access resources on the web; access e-mail through a desktop client such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mac Mail; or utilize Instant Messaging clients such as AOL Instant Messenger or iChat, please contact your business or institution for details on alternate web based connection services. You may also contact Help Desk Services for other possible options that may be available.
- Printing, printing through this service is not available.
- Open access, or printing, please use the public kiosks located throughout The George and Helen Ladd Library, New Commons, and the Bates College Imaging Center.
B. To Connect with a Windows Computer:
- Turn on wireless capability (if not automatic)
- Right click on wireless icon in system tray
- Choose View Available Wireless Connections
- Select the BatesGuest SSID
[NOTE: there is no security with this connection] - Click Connect
C. To Connect with a Macintosh Computer:
- Turn Airport On
- Click on the Airport icon to View Available Wireless Connections
- Select the BatesGuest SSID
Launch a web browser [http://CMapp.bates.edu] and you will be prompted to download and install the temporary software, and then enter your Bates User Account credentials.
