Sophos Anti-Virus Installation for Windows

A. Downloading and Installing Sophos Anti-Virus

  1. Follow this link and login using your Bates username and password.
    https://transact.bates.edu/downloads/index.php?RESOURCE=Sophos/Windows/ESXP.exe
  2. Click on the “ESXP.exe” link to download the Sophos installer.  If given a choice, save this file to your Desktop.
  3. After the download is complete, double click on the ESXP.exe file to start the installation process.  Sophos will install all the basic files necessary to run and then proceed to automatically update.  This process may take some time.  When it is complete, a shield icon will appear in the system tray, most likely in the lower right corner of the screen.  At this point, you can throw away the ESXP.exe file since the installation is complete.

B. Configuring Sophos

  1. Open Sophos Anti-Virus by clicking on the Start menu > All Programs > Sophos > Sophos Endpoint Security and Control >Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.
  2. Click “Configure anti-virus and HIPS“.

  3. Click On-access scanning.
  4. Click on the Options tab.
  5. Click to select the “Scan for adware and PUAs” check box.
  6. Click to select the “Scan for suspicious files (HIPS)” check box.
  7. Click on the Cleanup tab.
  8. Click to select the “Automatically clean up items that contain virus/spyware” check box.
  9. Under Viruses/spyware and Suspicious files, select the  ”Deny access and move to:” options.
  10. Click Ok.Right-Click Scanning
  11. Click on Right-click scanning.
  12. Click on the Cleanup tab.
  13. Click to select the “Automatically clean up items that contain virus/spyware” check box.
  14. Under Viruses/spyware and Suspicious files, select the  ”Deny access and move to:” options.
  15. Click to select the “Automatically clean up adware and PUAs” check box.
  16. Click Ok.Sophos Live Protection
  17. Click on Sophos Live Protection.
  18. Click to select the “Enable Live Protection” check box.
  19. Click to select the “Automatically send sample files to Sophos” check box.
  20. Click Ok.Suspicious Behavior Detection
  21. Click on Suspicious behavior detection.
  22. Click to select the “Detect suspicious behavior” check box.
  23. Click Ok.Web protection
  24. Click on Web protection.
  25. Click to select the “Block access to malicious websites” check box.
  26. Click Ok.
  27. Click Ok.
  28. Close the Sophos window.

Sophos is now configured and your computer is now fully protected.
