Bates College Telephone User’s Guide

CAMPUS CALLS

For any campus number (753, 777, 786, 755, or 795 exchange) dial only the last 4 digits of the number.

LOCAL CALLS

Dial 9 + 7-digit number.

LONG DISTANCE CALLS

From office telephones: Dial 9 + 1 + area code + 7-digit number.
From dorm telephones: Dial 9 and follow instructions on your calling card.

INTERNATIONAL CALLS

From office telephones: Dial 9 + 011 + country code + city code + the number you’re calling. From dorm telephones: Dial 9 and follow instructions on your calling card.

CALLING CARD CALLS

Dial 9 and follow instructions on your calling card.

COLLECT CALLS

Outgoing collect calls can be placed by dialing one of the following numbers:

INCOMING COLLECT CALLS TO DORMITORY ROOMS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

EMERGENCY collect calls will be accepted by Bates Security at 207-786-6254.

Because the telephone lines in dormitory rooms belong to Bates College, they are considered business lines by Verizon, not residential service. Therefore, these phones do not qualify for any discounted long-distance calling packages (i.e., MCI’s Neighborhood, etc.).

CALL FORWARDING – ALL CALLS

To forward all of your incoming calls to another extension or voice mail.

To activate: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial *2
Dial the destination extension number (6789 for voice mail) right over the beeps

Hang up.

Your calls will forward at the first ring. (When this feature is active you have no option to answer the incoming calls.)

To cancel: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial #2

Hang up.

CALL FORWARDING – BUSY

To forward calls to another extension or voice mail only if your line is busy.

To activate: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone

Dial *3
Dial the destination extension number (6789 for voice mail) right over the beeps
Hang up.

To cancel: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone

Dial #3
Hang up.

CALL FORWARDING – NO ANSWER

To forward your calls to another extension or voice mail, if unanswered after the fourth ring.

Note: This feature must be activated to ext# 6789 if you want voice mail to be able to answer your calls!

To activate: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial *4
Dial the destination extension number (6789 for voice mail) right over the beeps
Hang up.

To cancel: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial #4
Hang up.

ACCOUNT CODE DIALING

To charge a call to a different departmental account number.

Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial #1 + 7-digit account number to be billed + 9 + 1 + the number you are calling.

CALL TRANSFER

To transfer a call from your extension to someone else’s phone.

From office phones: Press flash button
Dial destination extension number
Announce the call and hang up.

DO NOT press switch hook on office phones or you will disconnect the caller!

From dorm phones: Press switch hook

Dial destination extension number
Announce the call and hang up.

If the person at the dialed destination does not answer, pressing the flash button, or switch hook on dorm phones, again will return you to the caller.

If the person at the dialed destination does not wish to take the call, you will reconnect to the original caller when the dialed destination hangs up.

To return to the caller if you reach voice mail instead of a person, press 99 to turn off voice mail; you will be automatically recon- nected to the caller after voice mail says “good-bye.”

CALL HOLD

To place a call on hold.

From office phones: Press flash button
Dial #9 over the beeps
Lay handset down
DO NOT HANG UP.

From dorm phones: Press switch hook
Dial #9 over beeps
Lay handset down
DO NOT HANG UP.

To hold a call and consult with another party:

From office phones: Press flash button.

From dorm phones: Press switch hook
Dial #9 over beeps
Dial third party.

To alternate between calls: Press the flash button (office phones) or switch hook (dorm phones)
Dial #9 over beeps

Resume conversation.

To return to a held call: Hang up
Your phone will ring
When you lift the handset you will be reconnected.

AUTOMATIC CALLBACK

To have a busy extension call you back (campus calls only).

To activate, after calling
and receiving a busy signal:


Press flash button (office phones) or switch hook (dorm phones) Dial *5 over the beeps
Hang up
When that extension becomes available, your phone will ring with three short rings

Lift handset and wait for other party to answer.

To cancel: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial #5
Hang up.

Callbacks remain active for 30 minutes only!

LAST NUMBER REDIAL

To retry a busy number.

When calling off campus
and you receive a busy signal:

Hang up

Wait a few seconds
Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial *9 to redial the number.

THREE-WAY CALL

To add a third party to your call.

Press flash button (office phones) or switch hook (dorm phones)
Dial third party
Party answers
Press flash button (office phones) or switch hook (dorm phones)
All three parties are now connected.

To drop one party, that party simply hangs up. Remaining two parties can continue to converse so long as one party is on campus.

CALL PICK-UP

Allows you to answer a call that is ringing at another phone.

 

From an idle phone: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone
Dial *7

Greet the caller.

To hold a call and pick up: Press flash button Dial #9 over beeps Dial *7
Greet the caller.

To return to held call: Hang up
Your phone will ring

Lift handset and continue conversation.

CALL PARK

To place a call on hold and retrieve it at a different phone.

To activate: Press flash button Dial *8 over beeps Hang up.

To retrieve from the same phone: Lift handset

Listen for dial tone
Dial #8
Resume conversation.

To retrieve from a different phone: Lift handset
Listen for dial tone

Dial #8 + the extension number of the phone where the call was parked
Resume conversation.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

*** Generally there is NO CHARGE for phone repair or replacement. Only if it is obvious that the phone was intentionally damaged will a charge be assessed.

The fee for a replacement telephone is $40.

*** DO NOT attempt to repair any phone yourself as this will void any manufacturer’s warranties and may result in your being charged for a replacement.

No dial tone:

Check the line between the wall and the phone. Make sure connections are secure at both ends. If someone has tripped over this wire it may have a broken conductor that will not be visible. You may request a new 14-foot cord by calling the Help Desk (x8222).

If the phone is still dead after replacing the line cord, report it to the Help Desk (x8222).

Voice mail does not answer, phone keeps ringing:

Lift handset
Listen for dial tone

Dial *4, followed by 6789 (dial this over the beeps) You should hear a continuous tone
Hang up.
If you don’t hear the continuous tone, but instead hear a busy signal: Hang up; wait two to three seconds
Lift the handset; listen for dial tone; dial #4
Hang up; wait two to three seconds
Lift handset; listen for dial tone

Dial *4, followed by 6789 (dial this over the beeps) You should hear a continuous tone
Hang up.

Report all other problems to the Help Desk (x8222).
