1. Open Thunderbird

2. Go to the Tools menu and down to Account Settings

3. On the left hand side, at the bottom of the window, click on Account Actions

4. Click Add Mail Account

5. Enter your full name, your Bates email address and your Bates network password. Click Continue.

6. Thunderbird will not be able to find the proper settings for your account automatically. Click on the Manual Setup button and put in the following settings.

Incoming: IMAP

Server Host Name: imap.gmail.com

Port: 993

SSL: SSL/TLS (Should change automatically when you enter the port number)

Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing: SMTP

Server Host Name: smtp.gmail.com

Port: 465

SSL: SSL/TLS (Should change automatically when you enter the port number)

Authentication: Normal Password

Username: Your full Bates email address

7. Click Create Account

WinSCP software for Windows is intended to be used to securely transfer files from local machines to the server abacus.bates.edu from on or off campus. Directory permissions need to be handled separately. Contact Help Desk Services, x8222 or e-mail: helpdesk@bates.edu to request permissions to a particular Bates web site, or if you have questions or concerns.

Download program from the following website: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winscp/files/
Click on the download entry for the most recent stable version.

A. Open WinSCP. The initial site setup window appears.

NOTE: If you want to add another new site, click Session, choose New Session

Enter the Host Name (abacus.bates.edu,  for example), and your Username and Password
CAUTION: It is never a good idea to save a network password in any application

Set File protocol to SFTP.

1. Click Login and say Yes to security warning (if any)
2. When connecting to Paris (netapp), the path on the right side should be  /usr/netapp/username
3. The path on the left side should point to the location of the file(s) to be transferred from the local machine (or, in the opposite direction, to pull down from the server to be edited on the local machine).
4. The blue arrows can be helpful to move up or down among the directories on either the local or remote sides to show desired folders/files.
   
5. Highlight folders or files to transferred, then press F5 to copy or F6 to move them to their destination.
6. Transfer of file(s) should be indicated in the log box below, with the number of bytes successfully transferred
7. Press F10to close the connection when the transfer is complete.TIP: Verify that the file has reached its destination and can be opened or viewed. Setting permissions for a new web file may be needed. Please consult: http://www.bates.edu/ils/web/publishing/permissions.html for details.

Why would I access a remote machine with SSH?
SSH is used to connect your computer to another computer or server securely. It is most often used with Unix servers so that you can work from your own computer as if you were sitting right at the remote computer. The session runs on your computer, but the information is processed on the remote computer.

How do I access a remote machine with SSH?
On a Windows machine using PuTTY software, on a Macintosh computer using Terminal software.

A. Connect to Software on Denmark:

1. Click on the Start menu
2. Select Run…
3. Type:
   denmarksoftwarewindows

OR:

1. Double click My Computer
2. Double click Software on denmark
3. Double click Windows

B. Install PuTTY:

1. Drag the PuTTy folder to your desktop
2. Open the folder
3. Double click to run: putty.exe

C. Run PuTTY:

1. Click on the Start menu
2. Select All Programs
3. Select PuTTy
4. Click Shortcut to PuTTy

D. SSH to abacus:

1. Host name: type abacus.bates.edu
2. Protocol: SSH

E. Save these settings:

1. Saved Sessions: type abacus
2. Click the Save button

The next time you want to connect to abacus:

1. Run PuTTY
2. Double click the saved abacus session
3. Connection opens automatically
4. Connect with abacus:
5. Click: Open button
6. Login with your Bates username and password

Denmark is a file server on the Bates Network from which Bates licensed software can be installed.

Not all software found on Denmark can be used by everyone. Some applications are specific for classes or special projects.

To comply with many of our software licenses, all licensed software is Keyed. In order to use a keyed application, KeyAccess needs to be installed on your computer. If the computer is not connected to the Bates Network, all Keyed applications will not run. If there are special circumstances that require a keyed application to be used outside of Bates, please contact the Help Desk at x8222.

A. To Access Denmark:

1. Windows:
Make sure you are connected to the Bates network.

1. Click on the Start menu and click Run.. (Windows XP) or in the Search Programs and Files field (WIndows 7) type:
   
   \\denmark

   and press Enter.

2. If it prompts for a username and password, type in your Bates username and network password.
3. Double click on the Software folder. Double click on either the Macintosh or Windows folder to find the software you need.

2. Macintosh:

1. From the Finder select the Go menu and select: Connect to Server…
2. In the Server Address field type (case sensitive):

   smb://denmark/software/Macintosh

3. Type in your Bates username and network password.
4. A window listing available software should open.

A. Download and Install Firefox

1. Download the correct/latest version of Firefox for your operating system http://www.mozilla.com
2. Save the file to your Desktop and once the download and extraction process is complete, double click the installer icon to run the program (accompanying screen shots refer to a Windows XP installation).

B. After the installer file has been uncompressed, select Next from the Firefox Setupdialog box.

1. Accept the license agreement and select Next
2. At the Setup Type dialogue box, accept the Standard setup, which is the default installation type, and click Next
3. Accept the default Location, and click Next to complete the installation

C. When installation is completed,

1. Uncheck, Use Firefox Start as my Home Page (if upgrading, current homepage will be imported)
2. Leave checked, Launch Mozilla Firefox..
3. Select Finish from the Install Complete dialogue box. Firefox will now start for the first time and allow you choose it as your default web browser (you can check to ask each time or not).

D. Next Firefox Import Wizardwill detect your system’s browsers. To import the settings and data,select the radio button. For a new installation do not import anything, for an upgrade choose previous version if listed.

1. Click Next

You will be prompted when the import process has been completed.
Click Finish

E. Extension and Themes:

1. Firefox 3.6.x includes addons to personalize your browser in look and function.
2. Personas wrap the frame of the browser window in a color or background.
3. Themes can be chosen for how to display the toolbar or dashboard in pattern, order, and by categories (sports, scifi, etc.).

F. Installing Bates College Certificate Authority

1. Open Firefox and go to:
2. http://abacus.bates.edu/ils/offices/web/crypto
3. Under the Certificates heading: Click Bates College Certificate Authority (CA)
   
4. On the Downloading Certificatedialog, click to check each of the boxes:
   • Trust this CA to identify web sites
   • Trust this CA to identify email users
   • Trust this CA to identify software developers
5. Click OK to finish downloading.

You are now ready to use Firefox.

If possible, it is best to plan ahead and visit the printer to gather necessary information to add it to your printer choices successfully.

All of the printers listed here are located on the canton server:

2. Dana-208-A = HP laserjet 4050
3. Hathor-208-A = HP laserjet 4250
4. Ladd-First-A and B = Kyocera 9530DN (with tray 3 and duplexing)

1. Find the name and printer model of the printer closest to you.
   Canton (Academic Printers)
   Lincoln (Administrative Printers)
2. Click on the Apple icon in the upper right of the screen and choose System Preferences.
3. Click on the Print and Fax icon.

   NOTE: To show the Advanced tab, control/click (right click), choose customize, and drag the advance button to that window, then you can proceed (it is not there by default).

10. Consult the list of Academic/Public printers on Canton for correct names.
11. Fill in the Name and Location [D] with the name of the printer
    
12. Under the Print Using drop down menu, select Select a driver to use…
    
13. In the search field, begin typing the Manufacturer (usually “HP”) and then the model number.
14. Consult the list of common campus network printers models (not all inclusive) for this information.
15. Once you find your printer in the list, select it and click Add
    
16. Check off the installed options for your printer
17. Click continue
    

B. Final Steps:

When you print your first document to this printer, a window will pop-up asking you for your Name and Password.

1. Enter bcis followed by your Bates username. Type in your Bates password. Select to Remember this password in my keychain and click OK.

Separate instructions are published for Macintosh OS 10.5x [leopard].

A. To remove a printer:

1. Click the Apple icon
2. Select System Preferences
3. In the System Preferences window, click on the Print & Fax icon. The Print & Fax window will display
4. Highlight the printer you wish to remove
5. Click the - button to remove a printer to the printer list  and the entry will disappear

B. To add a network printer:

1. Click the Apple icon
2. Select System preferences
3. Open Printers and Faxes icon
   
4. Click + [Add] button to add a printer
   
5. While holding down the Option key,  press  the “More Printers…” button
   
6. Click the drop down menu at the top and select Advanced
   
7. Click the Device drop down menu and select “Windows Printer via SAMBA”
   
8. In the Device Name field, type in the name of the printer,  Ex. Pgill 126
9. Consult the list of Academic/Public printers on Canton server or Administrative printers on Lincoln server for correct names
10. In the Device URL field type:
    smb://macprint:del1sh@bcis/<name of server>/<name of printer>
    Example: smb://macprint:del1sh@bcis/canton/Pgill-126-A    NOTE:BE SURE TO TYPE: del1 (“de” letter “l” then number “1″) before sh@bcis…A. Click the Printer Model drop down menu and select the manufacturer of the printer. Consult the list of common campus network printers models (not all inclusive) for this information.
    B.  Select the Model of the printer from the list Ex. HP Laserjet 4000 series
    C. Click the Add button
    
11. The printer should now appear in the printer list.
12. Select the printer and
13. Click the Printer Setup button
    
14. Click the drop down menu at the top of the window and select “Installable Options”
15. Select the options that come with this printer
16. Click the Apply changes button (if you make any)
17. Close the Printer Info window
