				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>LDAP, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server. The following steps describe how to configure LDAP as an option for the Bates directory in the address book of Thunderbird to work with the our server.</p>
<p><strong>A.</strong> Open <strong>Thunderbird</strong> on a PC or Mac.</p>
<ol>
<li>From the Thunderbird menu, click <strong>Tools</strong> and then click <strong>Account Settings</strong></li>
<li>In the <strong>Account Settings</strong> dialog box, select <strong>Composition &amp; Addressing</strong> from the left side of the screen.</li>
<li>Under <strong>Addressing</strong> select <strong>Use a different LDAP server:</strong></li>
<li>Click <strong>Edit Directories</strong></li>
</ol>

<p><strong>B.</strong> In the <strong>LDAP Directory Servers</strong> dialog box, click <strong>Add</strong></p>

<li>In the <strong>Directory Server Properties</strong> dialog box, on the <strong>General</strong> tab, enter the following information:
<ol>
<li>Name: Bates LDAP</li>
<li>Hostname: ldap.bates.edu</li>
<li>Base DN: dc=bates,dc=edu</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>NOTE:</strong>The Port Number should be left as the default.<br />

<li>Click <strong>OK</strong> to close the <strong>Directory Server Properties</strong> dialog box.</li>
<li>Click <strong>OK</strong> to close the <strong>LDAP Directory Servers</strong> dialog box.</li>
<li>In the <strong>Account Settings</strong> dialog box, open the pull down list under <strong>Addressing</strong></li>
<li>Select the Bates LDAP server you just defined.</li>
<li>Click <strong>OK</strong> to exit the <strong>Account Settings</strong> dialog box.</li>
</ol>

<p><strong>C: To test the LDAP configuration:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Click <strong>Address Book</strong></li>
<li>In the <strong>Address Book</strong> dialog box, select <strong>Bates LDAP</strong></li>
<li>You should be able to type in a last name within the search box and see the results of the lookup</li>
</ol>
