The preferences in your virus protection program must be set properly. Different programs have different places to set the preferences, but the main ideas are:

1. Scan all files, including zipped files, scan subfolders and boot sectors.
2. Disinfect infected files, not just notify you that a file is infected.
3. Have active or dynamic file protection selected ON. This will scan all new files BEFORE they are opened to release the deadly virus.

1. Follow this link and login using your Bates username and password.

2. Click on the “ESXP.exe” link to download the Sophos installer.  If given a choice, save this file to your Desktop.
3. After the download is complete, double click on the ESXP.exe file to start the installation process.  Sophos will install all the basic files necessary to run and then proceed to automatically update.  This process may take some time.  When it is complete, a shield icon will appear in the system tray, most likely in the lower right corner of the screen.  At this point, you can throw away the ESXP.exe file since the installation is complete.

B. Configuring Sophos

1. Open Sophos Anti-Virus by clicking on the Start menu > All Programs > Sophos > Sophos Endpoint Security and Control >Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.
2. Click “Configure anti-virus and HIPS“.
   On-Access Scanning
3. Click On-access scanning.
4. Click on the Options tab.
5. Click to select the “Scan for adware and PUAs” check box.
6. Click to select the “Scan for suspicious files (HIPS)” check box.
7. Click on the Cleanup tab.
8. Click to select the “Automatically clean up items that contain virus/spyware” check box.
9. Under Viruses/spyware and Suspicious files, select the  ”Deny access and move to:” options.
10. Click Ok.Right-Click Scanning
11. Click on Right-click scanning.
12. Click on the Cleanup tab.
    
13. Click to select the “Automatically clean up items that contain virus/spyware” check box.
14. Under Viruses/spyware and Suspicious files, select the  ”Deny access and move to:” options.
15. Click to select the “Automatically clean up adware and PUAs” check box.
16. Click Ok.Sophos Live Protection
17. Click on Sophos Live Protection.
18. Click to select the “Enable Live Protection” check box.
19. Click to select the “Automatically send sample files to Sophos” check box.
20. Click Ok.Suspicious Behavior Detection
21. Click on Suspicious behavior detection.
22. Click to select the “Detect suspicious behavior” check box.
23. Click Ok.Web protection
24. Click on Web protection.
25. Click to select the “Block access to malicious websites” check box.
26. Click Ok.
27. Click Ok.
28. Close the Sophos window.

Sophos is now configured and your computer is now fully protected.

A. Uninstall existing anti-virus programs.

B. Run the Sophos installer.

1. Click this link, and login with Bates username and password,
2. After login at the download page, a ”.dmg” file starts downloading immediately.
3. After the download is done, find the .dmg file/
4. Double-click it to mount it as a drive,
5. Double-click the installer it contains.
6. Click Continue at the Install Sophos Anti-Virus window.
7. Click Continue when prompted at the Read Me window.
8. Accept the default installation volume at the Select Destination Prompt and click Continue.
9. Click Install when prompted.
10. Enter your OS X administrator’s password to authenticate the installation and click OK.

C. Update Sophos

1. Click the Sophos shield icon on your menu bar, pull down to and click Update Now.
2. The Sophos AutoUpdate Status window will confirm when the update has been completed.

D. Run Sophos

1. Click the Sophos shield icon on your menu bar, pull down to and click Open Sophos Anti-Virus.
2. Click the green arrow to run an immediate scan to check your computer for viruses.
