With the Bradford Campus Manager software to connect to the network we can allow...

With the Bradford Campus Manager software to connect to the network we can allow Macintosh Snow Leopard full access to network resources, including network printing, and storage server access. All operating systems should have easier access for all users, including mobile devices (iOS & Android). Gaming consoles and microcells can be registered, although ILS can not guarantee results. The updating process is more flexible. Linux users should consult the following instructions for details on installation: http://cmapp.bates.edu/registration/Instructions.jsp (Linux at bottom of page).

A. E-mail Access:

Every student at Bates receives an academic e-mail address:
username@bates.edu (first letter of first name, up to seven characters of last name – unless username has been in system before, then a number is added, i.e. astudent or asmith8)

We support Bates Gmail and Thunderbird for e-mail at Bates.

A full list of supported E-mail choices are also on our web site

The use of Microsoft Outlook is strongly discouraged because it is consistently targeted for viruses.

B. File Storage:

Each student has access to network storage space for personal files via the Paris gateway.

Paris is backed up nightly and can be accessed from any networked computer on campus (SFTP from off campus). For more information:
Paris: Network File Storage Advantages and Tips

C. Library Catalogs:

Access the Ladd Library catalog and other electronic research databases through the Library web page from your dorm room.

Library homepage:
http://abacus.bates.edu/Library

D. Web Browsing:

Surf the web using Google Chrome or Firefox with a high speed internet connection.

If you do not have a browser, ask your JA or RC for help, or contact the Help Desk at x8222 for assistance.

E. Join the Workgroup:

To join the BCIS workgroup and get access to network printing and network file storage (PARIS)

Configure Workgroups for Windows XP

F. Anti-Virus Software:

Computers registered on the Bates network are required to have virus protection. Bates College supports, distributes and provides Sophos Anti-Virus to students. Other brands are also accepted more easily now.

Install Sophos Anti-Virus (Win)

ILS is pleased to announce a new and simplified process for requesting wireless Internet access and/or computer lab/podium login access for visitors.

Information and Library Services is pleased to announce a new and simplified Visitor Network Access (VNA) process for requesting wireless Internet access and/or computer lab/podium login access for visitors conducting Academic or Administrative work on behalf of the college. As a visitor’s sponsor, you can now make the request through the Garnet Gateway and within 1 – 3 business days a username and password will be available for your visitor.

The following network account types, each providing different types of access, are available for your visitor.

Wireless:
- Wireless Network Access (Limited), is the most common request. Available within 1 business days, this account provides visitors with basic web browsing for one personal device.

- Wireless Network Access (Full). Available within 1 business day, this account provides visitors with unrestricted access to the Internet and the ability to access IMAP e-mail or a VPN for one personal device. Virus protection is required on the visitor’s computer.

Network Access:
- Bates Lab Computer Access provides visitors with a username and password that can be utilized in one of the public computing labs on campus.

- Bates Podium Access provides visitors who are presenting with a username and password that can be used to login to a classroom or meeting room podium computer.

Requesting Network/Internet Access for a Visitor:
1. Login to the Garnet Gateway.
2. At the top of the window, click on the “Employee Menu” tab.
3. Under the Visitor Network Access section, click on the “Request Network Access” link.
4. Complete the Visitor Network Access Form, and click the “Submit” button.

Checking the Status of a Previously Submitted Request:
1. Login to the Garnet Gateway.
2. At the top of the window, click on the “Employee Menu” tab.
3. Under the Visitor Network Access section, click on the “Check Status of Netaccess Account” link.
4. A summary window will be displayed with a status for each request. To view the details of a request, click of the icon/symbol to the left of the visitors name and the request details will be displayed on the right side of the window.

Additional information regarding the VNA service and request form is available at the VNA site and its FAQ section. You can also contact Help Desk Services for assistance with the VNA process and application.

WinSCP software for Windows is intended to be used to securely transfer files from local machines to the server abacus.bates.edu from on or off campus. Directory permissions need to be handled separately.
The blue arrows can be helpful to move up or down among the directories on either the local or remote sides to show desired folders/files.
