The Learning Commons is an ongoing collaborative initiative of the office of the dean of faculty, information and library services, and the office of the dean of students designed to bring together and develop the support and services important for faculty and student success. Faculty and staff working on the initiative envision the Learning Commons as an umbrella entity that brings together a host of disparate providers from across the campus to share, centralize, design, and enhance programming for student and faculty learning. With its core in Ladd Library, the Learning Commons will foster new partnerships and better communication about students and faculty and change the dynamic of teaching, learning and scholarship at the College.
During 2007-2008, collaboration among potential providers deepened with regular conversations in Ladd Library about how best to support faculty teaching and research and student learning. In 2008-2009, the Learning Commons group will continue both independent and collaborative work, consider how best to configure prospective space in Ladd Library and elsewhere, and solicit ideas from faculty, students, and staff about what partnerships and space arrangements might work best. The groups participating in the current look at consolidating services are:

Offers monthly Tools for Teaching Workshops, the May Conference, and an August workshop and monthly seminars for new faculty
- Math and Statistics Workshop
Offers assistance to students in introductory level courses that have a mathematical component
- Peer-Assisted Learning Groups (PALG)
Offers student-to-student support in the sciences
- Director of Writing
Writing Resources for Faculty and Students at Bates
- Peer Writing Project
Offers student-to-student support in writing
- Writing Workshop
For students, faculty, and staff who want to learn more about critical thinking, writing well, and incorporating writing into courses
- Information and Library Services
- Academic Technology Services (ATS)
Supports training and the use of technology in the classroom
- Ladd Library
The Library develops collections and offering services which focus upon the curriculum needs of undergraduate students
- Language Resource Center
Resources and guidance for students and faculty regarding language learning, technology, and multilingual computing
- Office of the Dean of Students
- Academic Tutors
Offers Academic Tutors and support on a wide range of student issues including student advising and student activities
- Collaborative Services
- Imaging and Computing Center
A joint dean of the faculty-information services collaborative facility dedicated to enhancing visual thinking and communication accross the disciplines
