Writing and Speaking Assistants – Who We Are
Who are we? The 2012-13 cohort of more than 50 Peer Assistants reflects Bates in all its vitality and variety
We sing with TakeNote, Crosstones, Merimanders, Deansmen, and Northfield, host on WRBC, and perform at Pause and the Ronj. You can find us center stage in theater and dance performances and behind the scenes directing, choreographing, designing lighting and sound, building sets, stage-managing, and running the box office. Our group includes JAs and RCs, Bonner Leaders, AESOP trip leaders, Dana Scholars, Volunteer Fellows, Admissions Fellows, TAs, Peer Science Leaders, and HelpDesk and Math Workshop staff.
We’re out in the community with Habitat, Bates Buddies, and at Hillview and Trinity. We write for the Student and for Seed, and are members of the Authors Guild and the Arts House. We’re active in Outing Club, Bates Buddies, Environmental Coalition, OutFront, Film Board, Brooks Quimby Debate, Hillel, Robinson Players, Bates Democrats, Helicase, the Women’s Advocacy Group, Dharma Society, Bates Student Government, Photo Club, and the International Club, among many other groups.
We major and minor in virtually every academic discipline and speak ten languages besides English. We teach yoga and meditation, competitively ski, fence, run, sail, and ballroom-dance, and represent Bates in varsity lacrosse, tennis, soccer, cross country, track and field, and softball, as well as club ice hockey, rugby, fencing, and ultimate frisbee, and a host of IM sports.
You can even find some of us representing the College – and Peer Writing and Speaking – on the small screen: Power of Community: Picture-Perfect Bates Moments
