Matt Bettles

2010-11: Named Division III Player to Watch from the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association…. Bettles earned his first NCAA All-America honors on May 27, 2011, by reaching the Round of 16 at the Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. Bettles defeated Max Woods, a senior from Washington University in St. Louis, in three sets in the opening round of play, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Bettles advanced to the Round of 16 in the longest match of the Round of 32, clinching All-America status. He then fell 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 16 to the top seed, Emory University’s Dylan Pottish, but still became the team’s seventh All-American men’s tennis player and the fifth in the past six years…. Bettles finished the season with a 17-13 head-to-head record against opponents’ top players, in addition to NCAA championship competition. He was also 15-7 this year as a doubles partner with Rob Crampton, and the duo were named alternates to compete at NCAA’s. Bettles and Crampton were All-NESCAC Second Team Doubles selections, while Bettles was also a First Team Singles All-NESCAC selection.

2009-10: Named to NESCAC Men’s Tennis All-Conference Second Team in doubles with partner Amrit Rupasinghe. Rupasinghe and Bettles were the fourth-rated doubles pair in the Northeast Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s final rankings. The duo built a 7-6 record as Bates’ top doubles team over its final 13 matches, including wins over such highly ranked teams as Kenyon and Bowdoin. During invitational play in the fall, the pair went 8-2…. Advanced to the Round of 16 in singles play at the ITA New England Division III Men’s Tennis Championships in the fall.
