On a trip to see son Bob ’63 and family in Westport, Conn., Bob Butler Sr. and Bob visited Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. They all visited Bob’s daughter, Kathy ’67, and husband at their new home in Jupiter, Florida….Spencer Furbush and Al Thorp keep in touch. We are sorry to learn of the death of Spencer’s wife after 54 happy years of marriage…. During last winter’s season, Verna Geddes Morison and Georgette Lepage got together in Florida while Verna was with her sister in Hollywood and Georgette wintered at Hillsboro Beach…. After traveling in the United States and the British Isles last year, Louise Mallinson Jagger, now back at home, walks two to three miles each day whenever possible…. On a trip to Washington, D.C., via a Maine Line tour during cherry blossom time, Doris McAllister and her sister watched the changing of the guard at the Arlington National Cemetery…. In 1995 Frank Murray attended the General Consultation on World Evangelism in Seoul, South Korea, one of four thousand delegates from 180 nations that included Mongolia, Lesotho, India, Ukraine, Paraguay and the Gilbert Islands…. Earlier in the year Doris Neilson Whipple entertained the Auburn Art Club when Rae Harper Garcelon ’62 spoke about Bates…. In November 1995 Dick Secor retired from Chance Rides where he had been a top salesman for over 20 years. He and Stephanie are at home in Old Saybrook, Conn., summers, and they winter in Fort Myers, Fla. For his 80th birthday they flew to South America, walked through jungles using machetes, then traveled down the Amazon for 375 miles…. It was a chilly 20 below in November when Donald Smith spent a few days in Churchill, Manitoba, on Hudson Bay, Canada. Then it was even colder in April when he was in Barrow, Alaska, for four days — the northernmost settlement on the continent…. Canada was also the location where Larry and Toby Zahn Griffiths spent their 56th wedding anniversary at Larry’s birthplace in Saskatchewan. With his brother and wife, they went to various places where the Griffiths family had lived.

Ruth Clough Mendall finds great satisfaction in working at the Colby College Museum of Art. During the week she is a docent and on weekends she works in the gift shop. The perks are many: the opportunity to meet visiting artists, share formal and elegant dinners, take trips to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and be a student with tuition-paid courses. In May she went on a walking tour in Ireland accompanied by daughters Judy ’63 and Martha ’71. They spent a couple of days with a gypsy caravan and ate authentic Dingle Pie. Granddaughter Katie ’99 just completed her first year at Bates and is spending her sophomore year in Berlin after a spring Short Term in China…. The United Way of Androscoggin County presented the first Geneva Kirk Award for Community Service to Margaret Nichols, Bates registrar emerita and longtime volunteer at the YWCA and Maine Public Broadcasting. In presenting the award in her name, Geneva, LL.D. ’93 and herself a role model for volunteers, noted that Margaret Nichols has given the community the unselfish gift of herself. The YWCA, which nominated Margaret Nichols for the honor, described her as “committed, loyal, dedicated…bringing a very valuable combination of common sense, patience, and humor in all debates and strategy sessions.” Congratulations on a well-deserved honor!… Presently living in Orange, Conn., Jason Lewis attends cultural events at Yale. He reports that son Steven owns a genuine British pub in Richmond, Va., The Fox and Hounds; daughter Karen runs Seaside Stables on Ocracoke Island, N.C…. In June Barney Marcus was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his athletic achievements…. In Rhode Island, historianBill Metz has written The History of the Kingston Congregational Church, 1695-1995, published by the church…. We are saddened to learn of the passing of classmatesDonald Nims on Oct. 21, 1995, and George Scouffas on March 1 of this year; deepest sympathy to their families and to Daisy MacPherson Clark on the death ofVerdelle ’36 on March 5.
