George Schumer produced a John Denver memorial service at Community Congregational Church in Tiburon, Calif., last year. “The place was packed to the brim, as some 200 lovers of John’s music gathered to enjoy his songs and honor his memory,” George wrote recently from Richmond, Calif. “When John’s plane crashed into Monterey Bay, it was if I’d lost a best friend. It started back in ’73, with the album Rocky Mountain High. The songs’ purity and sincerity resonated with me, reminding me of some basic values I’d fallen away from. John’s was the grandest form of music: spiritually inspiring, melodic tunes that bring healing, of which John was the master. He was active in peace, anti-hunger, and environmental movements, and in one of his last albums he created arguably his best composition, ‘The Foxfire Suite.’ After his death, I attended two impromptu memorial services, which then spawned a desire on my part to put on a my own concert. The concert includes several groups performing John’s songs, plus spoken remembrances and informal singalongs. A modern dance interpretation of ‘The Foxfire Suite’ brought a standing ovation, while ballet performances of ‘Annie’s Song’ and ‘For You’ left few dry eyes in the place. John’s legacy of music and activism continues to bless my life. I have begun performing in rest homes and psychiatric wards, sharing John’s music and of other uplifting artists. His spirit continues on, inspiring me every day, and reminding me, in his words, ‘Though the singer is silent, there still is the truth of the song.'”
