Bates’ ivy stones are afixed to buildings from Alumni Gym to Hathorn Hall, some under ivy so thick that only whacks from a hatchet will reveal them to a photographer. Some stones in the sequence are missing, either lost during renovations or never installed, as in the mid-1970s, when the ivy tradition went on hiatus. (For its 30th Reunion in 2005, the Class of ’75 joined the tradition by designing its ivy stone, which will be installed April 2006.)
