Carolyn Jerard Barone writes: “Had my 90th birthday Oct. 23, 2004, and don’t feel any different than when I was 89! I still keep active with several organizations: PEO, DAR, OES, Women’s Club, and bridge. Not being able to drive is hard, as I feel I have lost my independence, but I have good friends, plus a volunteer who helps me.”… Jane Muskie, widow of Ed, died on Dec. 25. In a story in the Bangor Daily News, Chris Beam, archivist for the Muskie Archives at Bates, noted that Jane was perhaps the first wife of a national political candidate to take an active public role in her husband’s campaigns. Beam said Jane Muskie once told him how things had changed for her in four short years. “In 1968, reporters asked me about recipes. In 1972, they asked me about issues,” Beam quoted Jane Muskie as saying. Added Don Nicoll, longtime friend, “They were devoted to each other. Their personalities were different. They had a feisty relationship at times, but that never dampened their devotion and love for each other. It was a very impressive marriage.”
