Purpose
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their ultimate success.
Details
Applicants for Marshall Scholarships must be United States citizens at the time of study, and must hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States earned after April 2005, with a suggested GPA of 3.7 or better. Applicants are required to outline their proposed field and level of study and to nominate a first and second choice university in the United Kingdom. They are further required to justify their choice of course and institution in a statement which forms part of the application process.
At least 40 Marshall Scholarships will be awarded in 2008. They are tenable at any British university and cover two years of study in any discipline, mostly at graduate level, leading to the award of a British university degree.
Total value of a Marshall Scholarship varies a little in according to the circumstances (place of residence, selected institution, etc.). However, the average award tends to be approximately £20,000 annually. This is broken down into residence and living expenses, travel to and from the United States to Britain, tuition, books, travel in connection with studies, expenditures related to coursework, and in certain instances, dependant spousal support.
