You may not remember who spoke at your Commencement. But you do remember a professor’s six-word compliment scrawled on your essay. Bates celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, so we asked Bates people of various eras to share the moments that, despite the years, still dance in the mind.

"Saturday nights in Wilson House, we freshmen had a perfect view of the faculty party in the Women’s Union."

"We were surprised to see the October tide covering the road and creeping around the running boards of the chagrined Professor Chute’s truck.

"As Roger Tory Peterson and I marched in the academic procession, he suddenly turned to me and said, 'That bird has never been heard north of Hackensack, N.J.!' and bolted from the procession."

"Twelve close friends cruised to the Galapagos Islands. During the day we went snorkeling, hiking, bird watching, and swam with sea lions."
