When: Saturday April 3, 2005 , 1 p.m

Where: Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building, Bates College, Lewiston, Maine

Who: During the early morning of March 3, 2002 Bates senior and captain of the lacrosse team, Morgan McDuffee, was fatally stabbed while intervening in a street fight near campus.  A graduate of Lexington (Mass.) High School and Pine Hill Waldorf School, he was a star athlete first as a member of his elementary school swim team, then as captain of his high school lacrosse and football teams. He spent the winters at Killington Mountain Ski School as a junior Olympic ski racer. Equally important to him was his academic record including his hard-earned A on his senior thesis in macroeconomics, and at the Bates Commencement on May 27 the College awarded his degree posthumously.

What: This race is a fundraiser for Morgan's Fund which is part of the Maine Community Foundation, to help youth violence prevention.

The Youth Violence Prevention Program will be a program dedicated to the life of Morgan William McDuffee. This program is an accompaniment to the existing Safe School Initiative. The American Red Cross will implement the program in the second phase of the Safe School Initiative starting in 2004. The goal of the program is to reach out to elementary, middle, and high school children by devising an educational curriculum about youth violence prevention.

Providing help to others and trying to make things better exemplified the short, but meaningful life led by Morgan.

In the name of Morgan McDuffee, the program will educate youth about alternatives to violence and to prevent violent crime from occurring within our communities. The program will counteract violence head on with non-violence. Morgan's life will be highlighted as an example of a young man who profoundly influenced others by his joy for life, his compassion for others, his humility, and his moral courage to say no to violence.
