Schippers Beats Ende in Four, Claims Malloy Consolation Bracket

Schippers rebounded from a first-round loss, winning four consecutive matches to claim the Malloy Division Consolation title.

CANTON, N.Y. – Ben Schippers came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Penn's Ben Ende in four games to win the Malloy Division Consolation Bracket at the College Squash Association Individual National Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University on Sunday morning.

Schippers '04 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost the first game 7-9, but came back to win the next three, 9-6, 9-3, 9-2 in the consolation final.

Schippers advanced to Sunday's final with a pair of wins on Saturday. He started the day by coasting to a 9-1, 9-2, 9-0 win over Andrew Pizzi of Williams in the quarterfinals, then came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Hobart's Henry Clutsam 1-9, 9-1, 9-6, 9-2.

Schippers, Bates' No. 1 player, finished the season 18-8. A co-captain, Schippers helped guide the Bobcats to the best season in program history in 2003-04.

Bates finished 11th at the CSA Team National Championships last weekend, closing the season with nine wins over the final 10 matches of the season to post a 15-6 record. Schippers' five-game win at the No. 1 position in the 11th-place match gave Bates a 5-4 win over Amherst, helping the Bobcats avenge an earlier 6-3 loss to the Lord Jeffs. 

Schippers Splits at CSA Individual Nationals

CANTON, N.Y. – Ben Schippers rebounded from a first-round loss to defeat his first opponent in the consolation bracket of the Malloy Division at the College Squash Association individual national championship tournament hosted by St. Lawrence University on Friday.

Schippers '07 (Brooklyn, N.Y.), ranked 49th nationally, started the day with a 5-7, 9-7, 9-2, 9-0 loss to Cornell's Matt Greenberg.

Schippers lost the first two games of his consolation round match with Hobart's Prateek Patni by 9-3 scores, and was down 7-5 in the third game, but came back to win 9-7 to extend the match. He easily won games four and five by 9-1 scores to advance.

Schippers, who moved to 15-8 on the season, will face Williams' Andrew Pizzi on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Jaime White '05 (Summit, N.J.), ranked 60th nationally, lost both of his matches on Friday, falling to 51st-ranked Richard Sherwood of Stanford, 9-1, 10-8, 9-1 in the first round of the Malloy Cup, then 3-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-7, 9-6 to 40th-ranked Ben Ende of Penn. White finished the season 13-10 for the Bobcats.
