4/30/2008

Bates All-NESCAC doubles pair Amrit Rupasinghe '10 (left) and Ben Stein '09 both made the all-conference team as singles players as well.

HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bates College men's tennis team placed two players on the 2008 NESCAC All-Conference Team, announced Wednesday by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Junior Benjamin Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) were both named Second Team All-NESCAC as both singles players and as a doubles team.

Stein and Rupasinghe teamed up to go 20-9 as Bates' top doubles pair this year, achieving a No. 1 ranking in the Northeast, as determined by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

It is the second and third All-NESCAC honor for Stein, who was also named to the 2007 All-NESCAC Second Team as a singles player. Stein assembled a 17-9 record in singles this year and is currently the No. 7 ranked singles player in the Northeast.

Rupasinghe wins his first and second All-NESCAC awards. He went 15-10 playing singles for the Bobcats, most often at the No. 2 spot for the Bobcats, who finished the year with a 12-5 overall record and the No. 22 ranking in Division III.

Bates will host the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships from May 13 to 18.
