Colony, Northrup Fall Just Short on Day Two of NCAA Championships
May 28, 2004

Joe Northrup was in seventh after the 110 hurdles and posted season-best performances in the javelin and 1,500 on Friday.
DECATUR, Ill. –
Joe Northrup finished 10th in the decathlon and Joel Colony was missed the cut for the 100-meter dash final by less than a tenth of a second on the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Millikin University on Friday afternoon.

Northrup '06 (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) scored 6,417 points in the decathlon, just 82 points shy of duplicating his 2003 performance. Matt Roberson of Claremont Mudd-Scripps won the event with 7,171 points. Middlebury's Khristoph Becker was a distant second with 6,712.

Northrup, who started the day tied for eighth, got off to a good start in the 110 hurdles, finishing fourth. He struggled, however, in one of his usual strengths: the pole vault. While Northrup posted a season-best performance in the javelin and the 1,500 to close the meet, the point differential was too much to overcome to get into the top eight.

Colony '05 (Harrisville, N.H.) finished the 100 trials in 10.91 seconds to finish fourth in his heat. SUNY Cortland's Nick Weatherby crossed the line in 10.69 to post the fastest preliminary time. Dickinson's Greg Lott was the final qualifier for Saturday’s final, finishing in 10.84.

Bates has six points entering the final day of competition. Dustin Gauthier '05(Amherst, N.H.) will be the 11th seed in the shot put on Saturday.
