They have been writing “who me?” poetry and looking at the permanent collection to inspire their art making. They then took photographs to tell a story of who they are, what they do, and where they live.

Everybody took a turn at drawing each other with blind contour inspired by portraits hanging in the museum for the student show.

It has been fun! The  students composed a rap. We started out with a poetry round robin exercise, each person adding on to what the person to the right of them wrote. The only stipulation I gave them was it had to relate in someway to landscape. Some were really brave to let me video tape them! Here is a sampling.

They first tried their hand at blind contour drawing and then a round robin drawing exercise to loosen up and get their mind on art. Using the lesson, Your Place in Maine, they did a line drawing of a landscape from their imagination and then added pattern and color. Next week they collage landscape!

The program meets after school for 6 weeks on Mondays and Thursdays. The students will start with a tour of the museum on February 25th. The art lessons for the first six sessions will focus on landscape paintings from the Museums permanent collection. Check back for updates and examples of artwork created by the students.
