Exploring Emotions

Introduction:

My Unit will consists of 8-10 lessons across three weeks. It will include, but not be limited to, integrating Literacy with Art through drawing, painting, acting, singing, and/or writing. The unit will address Common Core standards for literary texts, grammar and usage, mechanics, poetry.

Common Core State Standards:
W.7.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

-Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.

SL.7.5. Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize salient points.

Teach It:

Each student will explore an emotion through art and poetry. They will learn about how artist portray mood and emotion through their artwork. They will view various types of artwork and write poems which emphasize a certain mood, and discover the connections between visual and literary mood. Each student will create an iMovie video clip with text and imagery which relates to their chosen emotion. The video clips will be combined to create a collaborative multimedia video. There will be an opportunity to use internet to develop vocabulary, present a Power Point, and project in video format.

Dig Deeper:

Students will host a celebration and viewing party for their class video project. It will be held at the Olin Arts Center at Bates College. During the celebration, students and their guests and families will tour the museum and watch the video. Afterwards, everyone will complete an evaluation form to give feedback about the project.
