In 1984 Weston Naef left the Metropolitan Museum of Art to become the founding curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Over twenty-five years, he proceeded to acquire one of the world’s largest photography collections, and directed photography exhibition and publication programs. He is the author of numerous publications, including Era of Exploration: The Rise of Landscape Photography in the American West: 1860-1885, The Collection of Alfred Stieglitz: Fifty Pioneers of Modern Photography, The J. Paul Getty Museum Handbook of the Photographs Collection, Photographers of Genius at the Getty. Naef is lead author of the critically acclaimed 2011 book, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs, published by the Getty in 2011.
